Bachelor of Medical Laboratory

The bachelor of medical laboratory is a four years, full-time degree program to meet the needs of the medical diagnostic laboratory profession for a science-based academic qualification. The four-year program includes a comprehensive grounding in health sciences and specialized training in the various laboratory testing disciplines, such as microbiology, biochemistry, and hematology. Student will learn how to analyze the chemical substances in the body, detect abnormal cells in the blood, identify the type of bacteria responsible for an infection, and match the blood given to an accident victim. The Medical Laboratory classes will include the following topics:

  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Haematology
  • Transfusion Science
  • Immunology
  • Histological Technique
  • Medical Cytology
  • Human Cytogenetics
  • The study of Parasites

Medical laboratory professionals are the behind-the-scenes backbone of medicine. As new discoveries advance scientific knowledge, the scientists role will continue to change and expand. Even now, we can see the impact of future tests that may be developed for diagnosing such health problems as cancer or genetic disorders. Medical laboratory scientists perform tests in different disciplines and have a wide range of career options. Every day brings a different challenge and new problems to solve. People who work into the Medical Laboratory field wide range of studies from from human anatomy to the genetic and molecular particles that affect it.

Bachelor of Medical Laboratories has wide number of practical sessions where students are required to apply what it’s been taught in classes; therefore, students are required to attend and pass these practical sessions. A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used including lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, and training lectures at the laboratories. Students are expected also to read textbook materials and do assigned homework. Courses in general are assessed separately using a mixture of examinations, coursework, practical laboratory training tests and projects.

Medical laboratory graduates can be based in hospitals where they provide urgent and routine laboratory results to A&E, intensive care, surgery, clinics and ward staff or in the community providing diagnostic support to general practitioners, med lab scientists also find challenging employment in other areas. Medical laboratory graduates can also work as medical laboratory consultant, laboratory advisor, Forensic biological assistant manager in hospitals, clinics, and medical centers.
